Day 17: Holding On The Marriage Covenant

And Pharisees came up to him and tested him by asking, “Is it lawful to divorce one’s wife for any cause?” He answered, “Have you not read that he who created them from the beginning made them male and female, and said, ‘Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’? So they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.
— Mathew 19:3-6

The institution of marriage has always been God’s idea and thus has to be done his way. It is interesting that  people have designed their own way of what marriage should be for them. To some it’s a contract, “let us try and see if it works, we can separate if it does not work”. To others it is for convenience; what is there for them, and when they find out that what was there for them is no more, they turn to create a sense to leave. Yet at another level, the devil has brought in his idea of anything goes. The church must arise and stand against all these forms of ungodliness.

"With all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace." Ephesians 4:2-3

“And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, in whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, outcry and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and tenderhearted to one another, forgiving each other just as in Christ God forgave you” Ephesians 4:30-32

The enemy is good at sowing seeds of unforgiveness, bitterness, hate, anger, etc. And where these exist, it grieves the Holy Spirit and makes life very difficult to live. If couples will learn how to walk in the spirit, they will be sensitive enough to discern when the enemy is coming after their homes. It is unfortunate that homes have been broken and left with so much hate and worse, children are caught up in the middle. We must learn to forgive one another because unforgiveness creates an atmosphere for the growth of bitterness, hate, anger, etc. Love must never be absent in any given time between the husband and wife, for that is the perfect space for the enemy.

You ask, "Why?" It is because the LORD is the witness between you and the wife of your youth. You have been unfaithful to her, though she is your partner, the wife of your marriage covenant. Has not the one God made you? You belong to him in body and spirit. And what does the one God seek? Godly offspring. So be on your guard, and do not be unfaithful to the wife of your youth.” Malachi 2:14-15

God hates unfaithfulness and divorce. God is the one who glues the man and woman together in a marriage covenant, and therefore marriage cannot be separated on the terms of the man and the woman.

Prayer Points

  • Pray that the glory of God-Jesus will dwell richly in every marriage, and for those marriages that Christ is not their dwelling place, pray that God will show mercy and open their hearts to repentance: The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.” John 1:14

  • Pray that God will grant husbands an understanding mind of the meaning of this verse so that their prayers will not be hindered: 1 Peter 3:7 “Likewise, husbands, live with your wives in an understanding way, showing honor to the woman as the weaker vessel, since they are heirs with you of the grace of life, so that your prayers may not be hindered.”

  • Pray that God will grant husbands true heart of love toward their wives, that same measure as Jesus poured out to the sinner man: “Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word.” Ephesians 5:25-26

  • Pray that God will grant wives the true understanding of submission: “Wives, submit yourselves to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord. Husbands, love your wives and do not be harsh with them.” Colossians 3:18-19

  • Honored by all; God honors the covenant of Marriage, therefore the husband and wife should do the same, although most often its not the case: Pray for the revelation of honoring the marriage and keeping the bed pure: “Marriage should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge the adulterer and all the sexually immoral.” Hebrews 13:4

  • Pray that God will grant husband and wife the understanding of their duties towards one another: “The husband should fulfill his marital duty to his wife, and likewise the wife to her husband. The wife does not have authority over her own body but yields it to her husband. In the same way, the husband does not have authority over his own body but yields it to his wife.” 1 Corinthians 7:3-4

  • Pray that God will grant the grace for the realization of this verse: “Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor. For if one falls down, his companion can lift him up; but pity the one who falls without another to help him up!Ecclesiastes 4:9-10

  • Pray that husbands and wives will align their plan/thoughts with the plan of God for their homes: “In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.” Proverbs 16:9

  • Adultery is a common problem in most marriages and also leads to pain and destruction: Pray that Husbands and wives will keep their marital vows and focus on each other: “But since sexual immorality is occurring, each man should have sexual relations with his own wife, and each woman with her own husband.” 1 Corinthians 7:2

  • Pray that God will meet the needs of every marriage; Unity, love, commitment, accountability, emotional, financial, spiritual needs etc:  “And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:19

  • Pray that husbands and wives will grow in grace and knowledge of God’s word: But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and forever! Amen.” 2 Peter 3:18

  • Pray that the Lord will arise and rescue marriages from the evil attacks of the enemy: The Lord will rescue me from every evil attack and will bring me safely to his heavenly kingdom. To him be glory for ever and ever. Amen.”2 Timothy 4:18

  • God made the husband and wife one because of his desire for Godly children. He hates divorce: Pray against this cancer called divorce that is spreading like wildfire in the church today. People don’t care anymore: “Has not the LORD made them one, having a portion of the Spirit? And why one? Because He seeks godly offspring. So guard yourselves in your spirit and do not break faith with the wife of your youth. “For I hate divorce,” says the LORD, the God of Israel. “He who divorces his wife covers his garment with violence,” says the LORD of Hosts. So guard yourselves in your spirit and do not break faith.” Malachi 2:15-16

  • Pray for healing and restoration of every marriage where husbands and wives have forsaken God and their vows: “But I will restore your health and heal your wounds, declares the LORD, because they call you an outcast, Zion, for whom no one cares.” Jeremiah 30:17

  • God’s banner over marriage is love. Pray that the Love of  God will move his hand to gather all the prodigal husbands and wives and bring them back to the altar and covenant of their marriages: “He will raise a banner for the nations and gather the exiles of Israel; He will collect the scattered of Judah from the four corners of the earth.” Isaiah 11:12

  • It does not matter how long; God can transform at any time. Pray for the restoration of every broken marriage, divorce, love, unity, joy etc:  “I will repay you for the years eaten by locusts— the swarming locust, the young locust, the destroying locust, and the devouring locust— My great army that I sent against you.” Joel 2:25

  • Pray for those couples that are still waiting on the Lord for the fruit of the womb, that God will remember them in this season of prayer/fasting: “Children are indeed a heritage from the LORD, and the fruit of the womb is His reward.” Psalm 127:3

  • Pray for that God will send a word of child bearing into the homes of every couple trusting God for the fruit of the womb: “Then the word of the LORD came to Abram, saying, “This one will not be your heir, but one who comes from your own body will be your heir.” Genesis 15:4

  • Pray that the fire of God will destroy all those human demons, witches, marriage broken, thieves etc who destroy marriages leading sometimes to divorce: “Is not My word like fire,” declares the LORD, “and like a hammer that smashes a rock?” Jeremiah 23:29

  • Pray against the compromise to undo the covenant of marriage-man and woman: “He answered, “Have you not read that he who created them from the beginning made them male and female, and said, ‘Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’?Mathew 19:4-6

Day 16: Arise, LORD! Deliver My Destiny From The Hands Of The Wicked

Arise, LORD! Deliver me, my God! Strike all my enemies on the jaw; break the teeth of the wicked.”  From the Lord comes deliverance. May your blessing be on your people.
— Psalm 3:7-8
For the oppression of the poor, for the sighing of the needy, now will I arise, saith the LORD; I will set him in safety from him that puffeth at him.
— Psalm 12:5
For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.
— Ephesians 6:12

“They have gaped upon me with their mouth; they have smitten me upon the cheek reproachfully; they have gathered themselves together against me.” Job 16:10. Have you ever been in a situation where you felt the enemy set its mouth open over you ready to bite you really hard? Sometimes we see these attacks in dreams and for some, it happens even during the daylight. Job tested this kind of attack before, but because he trusted his God, he was eventually delivered and restored. Job called on the Lord to break the jaw of his enemies. Job 29:17 “And I brake the jaws of the wicked, and plucked the spoil out of his teeth.”

“After this, the Moabites and Ammonites with some of the Meunites came to wage war against Jehoshaphat. “Some people came and told Jehoshaphat, “A vast army is coming against you from Edom, from the other side of the Dead Sea. It is already in Hazezon Tamar” (that is, En Gedi). Alarmed, Jehoshaphat resolved to inquire of the Lord, and he proclaimed a fast for all Judah. The people of Judah came together to seek help from the Lord; indeed, they came from every town in Judah to seek him.” 2 Chronicles 20:2-4

King Jehoshaphat was informed that he had been surrounded by a vast army (vs2). He was worried, but he did not settle in that state because fear only energizes the enemy. God has not given us a spirit of fear., “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control.” 2 Timothy 1:7

Some Spiritual Insights at the Battlefield

  1. During such circumstances, fear cannot be an option if you want to defeat the enemy. The enemy was getting closer to the king, but he decided to keep on self-control and seek the Lord. Hebrews 4:16 “Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need”.

  2. The king declared a fast for the entire land. Nehemiah 1:4 “As soon as I heard these words I sat down and wept and mourned for days, and I continued fasting and praying before the God of heaven.” Fasting is a tool used in controlling the flesh so that the spirit of man can focus on the Lord. Fasting must be deliberate, and the time used for the Word of God and prayers.

  3. He went into the presence of the Lord: 2 Chronicle 20:5 “Then Jehoshaphat stood up in the assembly of Judah and Jerusalem at the temple of the Lord in the front of the new courtyard.” Philippians 4:6 “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God”. Many people are intimidated and become anxious when faced with adversities. The word of God says we should not be anxious about anything but should bring that request before God. The king had an option to be anxious, but he also knew that anxiety was never going to assist him. He rather trusted God, so he went into God’s presence with confidence to seek strength that would assist him further to stay there praying.

  4. They worshiped and praised the Lord:  2 Chronicle 20:6 “Lord, the God of our ancestors, are you not the God who is in heaven? You rule over all the kingdoms of the nations. Power and might are in your hand, and no one can withstand you.” Psalm 34:1-2 “I will bless the LORD at all times; His praise will always be on my lips. My soul boasts in the LORD; let the oppressed hear and rejoice.” Blessing the Lord always means, irrespective of the situation. When we stay in the place of worship and praise in the time of adversity, it angers the devil because his goal is to keep us in bondage. And of course praise and worship have the power to unlock the chains of bondage and silence the enemy.

  5. Ensured there was no legal ground for the enemy: 2 Chronicles 20:10-11 “But now here are men from Ammon, Moab and Mount Seir, whose territory you would not allow Israel to invade when they came from Egypt; so they turned away from them and did not destroy them. See how they are repaying us by coming to drive us out of the possession you gave us as an inheritance.” If even there is a legal ground, we come to God in repentance, ask for mercy and cleansing by the blood of Jesus.

  6. Be attentive to hear the Lord in prayer and follow his instructions:2 chronicles 20:15-17. God spoke to them. He made them know that the battle is his. He encouraged them to take their positions and stand firm. The only position we must take in battle is humility in Christ.

  7. Faith: 2 Chronicle 20:20: Hebrew 11:6 “And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who approaches Him must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him”.

  8. Victory declared and thanksgiving offered: 2 Chronicles 20: 27-28 “Then, led by Jehoshaphat, all the men of Judah and Jerusalem returned joyfully to Jerusalem, for the Lord had given them cause to rejoice over their enemies. They entered Jerusalem and went to the temple of the Lord with harps and lyres and trumpets.”

Prayer points

  • Pray that God will give you spiritual guidance like in the days of King Jehoshaphat for every battle that comes your you.

  • Pray against the spirit of fear and intimidation. Ask the Lord for boldness and strength to face the enemy: “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control.” 2Timothy 1:7.

  • Pray that nothing will stand against your faith in Christ. Ask the Lord for help if you have unbelief. Hebrew 11:6 “And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who approaches Him must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him.”

  • Ask the Lord to arise in anger over all the enemies of your destiny: “Arise, O LORD, in Your anger; rise up against the fury of my enemies. Awake, my God, and ordain judgment.” Psalm 7:6

  • Ask the Lord to arise and bring every one of your enemies to their Knees: “Arise, O LORD, confront them! Bring them to their knees; deliver me from the wicked by Your sword.” Psalm 17:13

  • Stand upon the authority that is in the name of Jesus and command every knee of your advertises to perish: “Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth.” Philippians 2:9-10

  • Pray that every power, principalities etc must be scattered in the name of Jesus: “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.” Ephesians 6:12

  • Pray that any power sitting upon your destiny falls and dies in the name of Jesus because you are victorious in Christ Jesus: 1 Corinthians 15:57. "But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ."

  • Pray that the evil one will not see or destroy your destiny in Jesus’s name: 1 Peter 5:8. "Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour."

  • Pray for the Lord to protect your destiny: 2 Thessalonians 3:3. "But the Lord is faithful, and he will strengthen you and protect you from the evil one."

  • The Red Sea was a hindrance to the Israelites but the Lord dried it up and they walked on dry land. Pray that everything standing and blocking your destiny be dried up by the hand of the Lord: Joshua 4:23 For  the LORD your God dried up the waters of Jordan from before you, until ye were passed over, as the LORD your God did to the Red sea, which he dried up from before us, until we were gone over:
