Day 7: The Persecuted Church

Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
— Matt 5:10
Blessed are you when people hate you, when they exclude you and insult you and reject your name as evil, because of the Son of Man.
— Luke 6:22
Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed—not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence—continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose
— Philippians 2:12-13

“Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” Matthew 5:10. It takes the grace of God to stand on this word “blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness”. How can someone be hurting and yet hears they are blessed? How can someone be killed for doing the right thing and yet someone called them blessed? How can someone’s wife, child, mother, and friend be raped right in front of their face, and one call it blessed? How can people’s homes be burnt down for preaching Christ and called blessed? It goes on and on about what the persecuted church suffers. It is one thing to be hated for a day of a few weeks but when that becomes a lifestyle, that can really be problematic for the person living through that. In life we all want to be cherished, loved, and cared for, however, this is not the reality of some believers around the world.

“And Saul approved of his execution. And there arose on that day a great persecution against the church in Jerusalem, and they were all scattered throughout the regions of Judea and Samaria, except the apostles.” Acts 8:1. In the days of the Apostles, although the power of God was at work, the devil did not stop rather continued to threaten the church leading to recorded deaths. Today the story has not changed. They were stoned, they were sawed in two, they were put to death by the sword. They went around in sheepskins and goatskins, destitute, oppressed, and mistreated.” Hebrew 11:37. In different parts of the world persecution of different types is still being recorded leading to the loss of lives and properties, separation of families, imprisonment of loved ones, rape, ousted from families and communities, all because of their identity in Christ. Therefore, as intercessors, the need to pray is now as stated in Hebrew 13:3 “Continue to remember those in prison as if you were together with them in prison and those who are mistreated as if you yourselves were suffering.”.

Prayer Points

  • Pray that the persecuted church will be always remaindered by this word that in the midst of the torture they go through, God has not given them the spirit of fear: “For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.” 2 Timothy 1:7

  • Pray that the Lord will visit the persecuted church and reward them for their unfailing love and commitment to the work of God: “Truly I tell you,” Jesus replied, “no one who has left home or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields for me and the gospel will fail to receive a hundred times as much in this present age: homes, brothers, sisters, mothers, children and fields—along with persecutions—and in the age to come eternal life.” Mark 10:29-30

  • Pray that God will deliver them from the hands of the enemy: “My times are in your hands; deliver me from the hands of my enemies, from those who pursue me.” Psalm 31:15

  • Pray for the grace to stand on this word of God knowing that his rod and staff are comforting them in the midst of the hate that surrounds them. “Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.” Psalm 23:4

  • Pray for  the grace to continue standing with the persecuted church ever after today in prayer: Hebrew 13:3 “Continue to remember those in prison as if you were together with them in prison, and those who are mistreated as if you yourselves were suffering.”

  • Turn this bible verse into a prayer: “19 And pray for me, that words may be given to me when I open my mouth, to proclaim boldly the mystery of the good news [of salvation], 20 for which I am an ambassador in chains. And pray that in proclaiming it I may speak boldly and courageously, as I should.” Ephesians 6:19-20

Day 6: God’s Purpose Cannot Be Thwarted

I know that you can do all things; no purpose of yours can be thwarted
— Job 42:2
He has saved us and called us to a holy life—not because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace
— 2 Timothy 1:9
Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed—not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence—continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose
— Philippians 2:12-13

The word purpose means the reason for which something or someone exists or was created. Thus, nothing exists for the sake of just existing or just to be there. The bible says, in the beginning, God had a plan for creation; Genesis: 1:1” In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” He created man and had a plan for man (Before the fall) whom he had placed in the garden. After the fall of man, although man became an enemy of God, he did not give up but sent his son to mediate between him and man according to Romans 5:10 “For if, when we were enemies of God, we were reconciled to Him through the death of His Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through His life!” This is real love, and it amazes me each time I want to reflect on what this really means and how I have responded to this kind of love treatment. As reconciled people, he has chosen us, made us holy, call us his special property so that we can praise and worship him. 1 Peter 2:9 “But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light”. THUS THE PURPOSE OF OUR EXISTENCE: WORSHIP GOD AND SHOWCASE HIS BEAUTY IN EVERY ASPECT OF OUR BEING FOR HE ALONE DESERVE IT. Revelation 4:11 “Worthy are you, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they existed and were created.”

Job knew the purpose for which he was created as well as knew his God and that is why he was courageous to declare;“I know that you can do all things; no purpose of yours can be thwarted” Job 42:2. The purpose of God meant everything, his life and family. He knew that God’s purpose for him to showcase God’s glory did not matter what state his life was in. He knew that the enemy could not defeat the purpose of God. He stood on his faith in God, his firm understanding of God’s word even when the wife wanted him to abandon God. He knew that God will frustrate the plan of the enmeny. Job 5:12 He thwarts the schemes of the crafty, so that their hands find no success.” It did not matter to Job what was in his wife’s heart (Job 2:9) or his friends because the word of God says this:Proverbs 19:21 “Many plans are in a man's heart, but the purpose of the LORD will prevail.” The plan of God for Job prevail over the enemy’s plan and God was able to beautify him and Job continued to worship and brought him glory. Like Job we must come to that place an unshakable faith and know our God why we are here on earth. Hebrews 11:6 “But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.” We must know that God has a plan that cannot fail. All we need is to position ourselves in Christ who beauties us with God’s glory.

Prayer Points

  • Pray that God's plan for your life, family, marriage ministries, career, etc cannot be altered by any power or thing or human being: Psalm 33:11” But the plans of the LORD stand firm forever, the purposes of his heart through all generations.

  • Pray that any plan in your heart or the heart of anyone around you that is not in line with God’s plans must be destroyed in the name of Jesus: “Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails” (Proverbs 19:21).

  • Pray that nothing will stand in the way of your ability to do the good work you were created for: Ephesians 2:10 “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do”.

  • Job kept the word of God. His confidence in the God that can do all things was not shaken by his circumstances and he got his reward as God’s blessing upon him was unmeasurable. Pray that God grants you the grace to see that was upon this man: Job 42:12 “The Lord blessed the latter part of Job’s life more than the former part.”

  • Pray that God will open your ears and eyes to hear and see this Job’s God: Job 42:5 “My ears had heard of you but now my eyes have seen you”.

  • God had a plan for him and nothing could have changed it. Pray that God will show forth his power through you: Exodus 9:16“But I have raised you up for this very purpose, that I might show you my power and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth”

  • Declare this verse over yourself, family, the church: 1 Peter 2:9 “ But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light”

  • Declare this word over yourself and your family: Jeremiah 29:11”11 For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future”.

  • Pray that God will not pass you by but will reward your labor in his kingdom: Jeremiah 32:19”19 great are your purposes and mighty are your deeds. Your eyes are open to the ways of all mankind; you reward each person according to their conduct and as their deeds deserve”.

  • Pray that God who knows everything about you will do all that which he pleases within and through you: Isaiah 46:10-11 “10 I make known the end from the beginning, from ancient times, what is still to come. I say, ‘My purpose will stand, and I will do all that I please.’ 11 From the east I summon a bird of prey; from a far-off land, a man to fulfill my purpose. What I have said, that I will bring about; what I have planned, that I will do.”

  • You are the work of God's hand, pray that he will vindicate you from every trap of the enemy: Psalm 138:8 “ The LORD will vindicate me; your love, LORD, endures forever— do not abandon the works of your hands.”

  • Pray that every scheme of the enemy over the church, ministers of the Gospel must be put to shame: Job 5:12 He thwarts the schemes of the crafty so that their hands find no success.”

  • Pray that the plan of satan to confuse the people of God through false prophets, false gospel, or churches will not stand: Isaiah 44:25” Who foils the signs of false prophets and makes fools of diviners, who confounds the wise and turns their knowledge into nonsense”.

  • Pray that this verse will never be your portion:1 Chronicles 10:13 “So Saul died for his unfaithfulness to the LORD because he did not keep the word of the LORD and even consulted a medium for guidance”
