21-Day Prayer & Fasting: Day 18 - The Covenant of Marriage

But from the beginning of creation, ‘God made them male and female.’ ‘Therefore, a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.’ So, they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.
— Mark 10:6-9
So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.
— Genesis 1:27-28

God created a male and a female and saw that there was a need for these two to come together in what He called marriage. His goal was so that they could be of assistance to one another, as well as produce more of their kind. The only way God was able to bring a man and a woman together in marriage was by Him standing as a witness and making them together as one flesh after their union: as husband and wife. This is the only legal relationship permitted by God. Today people marry for convenience; “let’s try it and if it does not work, we can separate”.  Marriage has become an experiment rather than a covenant. There is so much neglect and abuse of God’s Word today. There are about 30% to 50% divorce rates within the church. Additionally, people have redefined what they think marriage should be even to the point where a woman gets married to another woman or a man to another man. They challenge God, telling Him they will choose their own way. Marriage has been abused even by the church.

  1. Pray for the restoration of the covenant of marriage according to the Word of God stated above. Mark 10:6-9 and Genesis 1:27-28

  2. Pray that the husband will always see the wife as part his rib, thus part of his own body parts and thus will treat his wife with God’s love. Genesis 2:22-24And the rib that the Lord God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man. Then the man said, “This at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.” Therefore, a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh”.

  3. Pray that husbands will heed to this word and guard themselves spiritually to prevent marital problems in their home. Malachi 2:14-15Yet you ask, "Why?" It is because the LORD has been a witness between you and the wife of your youth, against whom you have broken faith, though she is your companion and your wife by covenant. Has not the LORD made them one, having a portion of the Spirit? And why one? Because He seeks godly offspring. So guard yourselves in your spirit and do not break faith with the wife of your youth.”

  4. Pray that couples will focus on their values as two of them together, rather than selfish individualist ambitions. Ecclesiastes 4:9-12Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil. For if they fall, one will lift up his fellow. But woe to him who is alone when he falls and has not another to lift him up! Again, if two lie together, they keep warm, but how can one keep warm alone? And though a man might prevail against one who is alone, two will withstand him—a threefold cord is not quickly broken.”

  5. Pray that God will grant grace for couples to keep their marriage vows even in the mist of marital crisis. Ruth 1:16-17But Ruth said, “Do not urge me to leave you or to return from following you. For where you go, I will go, and where you lodge, I will lodge. Your people shall be my people, and your God my God. Where you die, I will die, and there will I be buried. May the Lord do so to me and more also if anything but death parts me from you.”

  6. Pray for humility, gentleness and patience with one another. Stand against pride and arrogance. Ephesians 4:2With all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love

  7. Pray that the husband will take his rightful place and responsivity in marriage, as head. There is so much that is expected. One cannot leave without a head. 1 Corinthians 11:3But I want you to understand that the head of every man is Christ, the head of a wife is her husband, and the head of Christ is God.”

  8. Pray that husbands will be consumed with love for their wives instead of divorce. Malachi 2:16For the man who does not love his wife but divorces her, says the Lord, the God of Israel, covers his garment with violence, says the Lord of hosts. So, guard yourselves in your spirit, and do not be faithless.”

  9. Pray that couples will seek time to enjoy their marriages. Ecclesiastes 9:9Enjoy life with the wife whom you love, all the days of your vain life that he has given you under the sun, because that is your portion in life and in your toil at which you toil under the sun.”

  10. Pray against the weapon of division, divorces, adultery, selfishness, self-centeredness etc., in marriages formed against marriages. Isaiah 54:17no weapon forged against you will prevail, and you will refute every tongue that accuses you. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD, and this is their vindication from me," declares the LORD.”

  11. Arise and challenges these evil forces that continues to arise against marriages. Ephesians 6:12For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this world’s darkness, and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.”

  12. Pray against the spirit of adultery in marriages. Mathew 5: 27-28You have heard that it was said, ‘Do not commit adultery.’ But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman to lust after her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.”

  13. Pray for those still waiting on God for their marriages that God will arise and help the husband locate his wife.  Pray against the forces of marital delay and misguidedness. Proverbs 18:22He who finds a wife finds what is good and receives favor from the LORD.”

  14. Pray that the favor of God will rest upon those waiting on God for marriage. Luke 1:30But the angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God.”

  15. Pray against the wicked spirit of same sex relationships going on around the world today. Romans: 1: 24-27Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. They exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator—who is forever praised. Amen. Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones. In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed shameful acts with other men and received in themselves the due penalty for their error.”

  16. Pray against demonic altars standing and chanting against marriages and those who are looking for their spouses. 1 Kings 16:32So he erected an altar for Baal in the house of Baal which he built in Samaria.”
